Dia de los Muertos Flower Crowns
I am super excited for Dia de los Muertos! It is a day for us to remember and celebrate our loved ones who have passed away and whose spirits visit once a year. This will be my first time making an altar and hosting the little get together with my family so I want to make it extra special.
A tradition of Mexicoβs Day of the Dead is to dress up as Catrine and Catrinas, paint your face in the style of the sugar skull and dress in outfits appropriate for the occasion, which typically includes flower crowns :)
This DIY was pretty fast to make once you have all of your materials picked out. Lets get started!
Materials:
Headbands
Hot glue gun
Faux flowers
Zip ties (optional)
Gold spray paint (optional)
Zip Tie Version
Step 1: Lay your zip ties out on a flat surface with something underneath. Grab your can spray paint and go to town. Make sure you are doing a nice even coat.
Step 2: Once dry, flip over and spray the backside.
Step 3: I found it easier to almost fully zip the ties closed and then slide them onto the headband to make sure they are all going the same way. Once you have them spaced out to your liking go ahead and tighten them as much as you can to secure them in place.
Step 4: At this point, I suggest trying the headband on to make sure the ties are all even and you can adjust as necessary before gluing the flowers on.
Step 5: Heat up your glue gun. Start taking your flower heads off the stems and decide on your design. I started with the larger flowers and then used the smaller ones as fillers.
Step 6: Begin hot gluing the flowers to the headband/base of the zip ties. When you are finished you can choose to trim down the zip ties or cut them at different lengths.
Your flower crown is complete! You can also make a version without the zip ties.
Let me know if you are celebrating Dia de los Muertos this year and what some of your family traditions are!
Cheers :)
